You will find Frøbjerg Bavnehøj some 8 km to the south east of Aarup. The flat top of the hill is 131 meters above sea level and it is the highest point on the island Funen (Fyn). The area around the hill has been preserved since 1947.
Frøbjerg Bavnehøj and the area around it has been a gathering place for local people in ages. At the 5th of June Danes gathers here to celebrate the Constitution Day. In the park round the top you will find a lot of monuments. For instance:
Women’s Right to vote – 1915
Memorial park for World War 2 victims – 1940-45.
From the top you have a stunning view quite across Funen and on a clear day you can see the bridges at both sides of the island. In august the park is used for an open air theater.
Frøbjerg was named after the Danish goddess of fertility – Frø or Frej. The second part of the name “bavn” means a beacon – used to signal danger or war. A fire was lit at the top in 2005 to signal the birth of Prince Christian of Denmark.
